The Walmart iPhone-Not Necessarily the Best Deal

The iphone finally goes on sale today at nearly 2500 Walmart locations. It was originally rumoured that Walmart would sell the iphone for $99 — thats not the case. You will however,  get a whopping $2 discount. The 8 gigabyte  iPhone 3G  will cost $197, and the 16 gb version sell for $297, with a two-year  AT&T service contract.

Walmart has said that it will match local competitor prices like BestBuy. BestBuy  is currently selling the iPhone  at a $10 discount.

What about the $99 iPhone?

You are not going to find one at Walmart or BestBuy, but you will find one over at AT&T. If you do not mind a gently used iPhone of the refurbished variety, then this is a great deal.

Here is what AT&T claims about their refurbished phones – Refurbished phones are previously owned devices that have been unused or lightly used and returned during the 30-day trial period. Each refurbished phone is independently quality tested and loaded with the latest software to meet current factory standards. Some refurbished iPhone 3G devices will have minor scratches. You also get a 90 day warranty.

There is no doubt Walmart will sell a lot of iPhones in the upcoming months, but if I just had to have one, I would go with a “gently used one”.
