Wi-Fi Hot Spot From Your Cell Phone

March 29th, 2008

walkinghotspot

Creating a wifi hotspot with your 3G/wifi enabled cell phone seems to be a developing trend. TapRoot Systems this week introduced its walkinghotspot application. You probably are aware of a similar application, JoikuSpot, which has been on the seen for a while. Both applications allow you to connect other wifi enabled devices through your phones 3G internet connection. This will allow you to easily share your connection with your friends, if you want to.

Nokia N95

What are the differences? JoikuSpot only supports Symbian s60 phones, while walkinghotspot will support both s60 and windows mobile devices. TapRoots plan is to sell its software directly to the carriers, so usage charges can probably be expected. JoikuSpot is available now as a free download.

Become A Mobile Applications Tester

Mob4Hire Launches in Beta

How would you like to test new mobile applications? Sound interesting? Well, A new company called Mob4Hire is using crowd sourcing to help mobile developers test new mobile applications. New projects are listed on the site along with eligible cell phones.

They do not seem to have a problem getting testers, with over 350 in the system. More developers need to get on board, since there is only one project currently listed.

I am just a little bit wary about testing unproven applications on things I depend on. What if my cell phone crashes, gets a virus of some type, who knows what else? The risk are probably low, but I think I will leave it up to the more daring and adventurous type.

Below is a little more information on how the whole process works.

From the site:

How Mob4Hire works: — Mob4Hire is responsible for building and maintaining a large community of testers, ranked by their quality of participation.

– Developers post Test Applications to the community, specifying desired handset(s) and network(s).

– Testers bid for the work, developers choose testers based on price and/or community ranking.

– Payment is held in escrow by Mob4Hire and released via PayPal when testing is complete. Confidentiality is guaranteed.

The pricing structure is a bit complicated, but here it is.

Martin Cooper’s Futuristic Visions

March 27th, 2008

Source: Wikipedia

In just 15 to 2o years from now, Martin Cooper believes we will have wireless devices embedded in our bodies for diagnosing a curing illnesses. The power for these devices would come from our bodies. It all sounds a bit sci-fi to me, but who had any idea that cell phones would be as popular as they are today.

Cell phones have come a long way since the “brick” was first introduced. We now depend on them to get us through our busy daily lives.

I guess we will have to wait a couple of decades before we see if Mr. Cooper’s predictions come true. Things will be much different I know, but will people be ready to for wireless implants? We shall see.

From the article:

When Martin Cooper invented the cell phone 35 years ago, he envisioned a world with people so wedded to wireless connections that they would walk around with devices embedded in their bodies.

If super-light cell phones are your thing, then the modu cell phone is for you. It has been named by the Guinness Book of World Records as the worlds lightest cell phone. Its smaller than a credit card and weighs in at just 1.41 ounces. The tiny modu is fully functional on its own, but can be inserted into a variety on modu jackets phone enclosures that allow you to create a new look or design for additional functionality.

It all sounds interesting, but this phone is too small for my taste.

Airline Allows Cell Phone Calls In-flight

March 21st, 2008

The Dubai-base Emirates airline has announced a policy of allowing passengers to make cell phone calls during flight. Quantas has announced plans to allow the use of cell phones for text messaging and e-mail. Is this the way all airlines should go — combining convenience with common sense?

IMO…as long as any electromagnetic interference is taken care of and people mind their cell phone etiquette, I like it.
